GAF opened 2026 with a color move, not a new shingle platform. On Jan. 8, 2026, from Parsippany, N.J., the company said [Timberline HDZ](https://www.gaf.com/en-us/roofing-materials/residential-roofing-materials/shingles/timberline-hdz?ref=ridgereport.news) will carry a new [Bold Definition color collection](https://www.gaf.com/en-us/about-us/news-press-releases/2026/introducing-new-bold-definition-color-collection-for-best-selling-timberline-hdz-shingles?ref=ridgereport.news) alongside the High Definition colors already on the shelf. Four SKUs landed: Chestnut Valley, Cliffside, Midnight Mesa, and Sierra Sand. Both collections were shown at IRE 2026 in booth 3601 (Jan. 20–22, Las Vegas).

For shops that already bid HDZ, the product under the wrapper did not change. What changed is how you sell the look — and how carefully you separate this story from Class 4 UHDZ UltraMat.

Why it matters

- Know how to pitch Bold Definition vs High Definition on the driveway without conflating lines.
- WindProven still means the four required accessories—do not sell the look without the system.
- Pull current GAF datasheets before you update proposal language.

## What GAF actually announced

Bold Definition is positioned as richer tones and stronger contrast — roof as focal feature — versus the established High Definition look. Chris Rector, GAF’s chief marketing officer, put it this way in the company release: “With two distinct color collections to choose from, Timberline HDZ® Shingles always make a great first impression… Our enhanced color offering ensures that every homeowner has more choices and can achieve unrivaled beauty that demands a second look.”

Install stack stays the same: LayerLock Technology, StrikeZone nailing area, and Dura Grip adhesive. Warranty and rating language in the release is familiar HDZ: eligible for WindProven Limited Wind Warranty when installed with the four required GAF accessories (GAF calls it the industry’s only wind warranty with no wind speed limit under that condition); available 25-year StainGuard Plus algae protection limited warranty; UL 2218 Class 3 impact; Class A fire.

## How to talk Bold Definition vs High Definition on the bid

Treat this as a curb-appeal / matching conversation, not a performance upgrade. Same laminate family. Same nailing zone. Same accessory rules for WindProven. The estimator’s job is to show both collections when the HO cares about look, then lock the color name on the contract and the yard ticket.

- **Color upsell:** Offer High Definition and Bold Definition as two look paths on the same HDZ line. Don’t invent a “better” warranty story for Bold Definition — GAF didn’t.
- **Matching:** Partial reroofs and additions still live or die on color availability and blend. Get the Bold Definition SKU confirmed at the branch before you promise a match to an existing High Definition roof.
- **Inventory:** Four new colors means four more SKUs your counter has to stock or special-order. Ask the branch which Bold Definition colors are on the floor versus mill-order in your market before you put them on a one-week storm schedule.

## WindProven still means four accessories

Nothing in the Bold Definition launch loosens WindProven. If you sell “no wind speed limit,” you still need the four required GAF accessories on the system. Put that checklist on the takeoff, not in a brochure footnote after the sale.

## Class 3 HDZ is not Class 4 UHDZ UltraMat

HDZ remains UL 2218 Class 3 in GAF’s Bold Definition materials. Separately, The Ridge Report has already covered GAF’s nationwide Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat Class 4 story. Do not let sales blur “new Bold Definition HDZ” into “Class 4.” Different product lines. Different impact marks. Different package checks. If a carrier or HO asks for Class 4, you are in the UHDZ UltraMat conversation — not this color collection.

> Bold Definition changes the color board. It does not change the impact class or the WindProven accessory count.

The Ridge Report take: train sales to say “two HDZ color collections — High Definition and Bold Definition” and train ops to verify SKU, accessories, and Class 3 vs Class 4 before the dump truck rolls. That is the bid change from Jan. 8.

Warranty and rating claims are as stated by GAF; always confirm current GAF published requirements for WindProven accessories and registration.*
