- Description: Tesla stopped new Solar Roof orders in August 2026. Installers are stranded with training spend, rewritten pipelines, and decades of glass-tile service risk.

Tesla told certified installers in August 2026 it will no longer take new Solar Roof orders. Conventional panels stay. The glass-tile roof that was supposed to replace asphalt and rack mounts does not.

For shops that poured training, crews, and pipeline into the program, that is not a product memo. It is stranded cost, awkward customer conversations, and a decades-long service question on roofs that were sold as permanent building systems — not gadgets.

What it means for your crew

- Treat Tesla Solar Roof as closed for new orders; keep conventional panel work on the books separately.
- Inventory training hours, specialized tools, and unfinished Solar Roof pipelines before you rewrite sales scripts.
- Plan decades-long service conversations for installed glass-tile roofs—warranty and leak response still sit with the shop.
- Before chasing the next proprietary roof system, stress-test what happens if the OEM kills new orders mid-cycle.

## What changed

Reporting from [Electrek](https://electrek.co/2026/08/20/tesla-discontinues-solar-roof-panels-only/?ref=ridgereport.news) and trade coverage in [Roofing Contractor](https://www.roofingcontractor.com/articles/102637-tesla-solar-roof-exit-leaves-contractors-facing-costs-service-questions?ref=ridgereport.news) (Sept. 1, 2026) line up on the same facts: third-party certified installers were told Solar Roof tiles are done; Tesla will supply panels only going forward. Tesla’s own Solar Roof page now redirects to solar panels, and Solar Roof is gone from the Energy menu.

Internally, sources told Electrek the product was not financially viable. Across roughly seven years, Tesla installed on the order of 3,000 Solar Roof systems in the U.S. — nowhere near the early weekly-install ambitions. Solar deployments had already been shrinking while storage (Powerwall / Megapack) grew.

## The installer bill came due first

Solar Roof was never “add another shingle line.” Contractors described West Coast multi-week training, crews that had to handle roofing *and* dense electrical glass-tile work, specialized flashing, and — in some cases — a requirement to sell and install three jobs before full certification.

Adam Yost, CTO at Dayton, Ohio’s Elevated Roofing & Siding, told Roofing Contractor the biggest spend was not gear: it was training, estimating and sales process, crew education, permitting and utility work, and learning a product that behaved like a new trade. Install times told the same story — roughly two weeks for Solar Roof versus about two days for conventional rack-mounted PV, per contractors interviewed.

Some shops told Electrek they are looking at six-figure losses when training, tooling, and program cost are totaled. Others never finished certification. Ryan Westfall of Westfall Roofing walked away in part over transitions, maintenance risk, and the three-job barrier before he would even be certified.

## Pipelines are being rewritten job by job

Elevated had customers deep into evaluating Solar Roof when Tesla pulled the plug. The shop is working those opportunities one by one: finish with remaining inventory where possible, or move the homeowner to conventional roofing plus Tesla panels, standing-seam metal with solar, or another premium system.

Greg Field of PGT Home Energy Solutions in Tempe described the same bind on luxury custom work — redesign mid-pipeline or tell the customer the product they picked no longer exists. Shops that lived mostly on Tesla panels and Powerwall (Saguaro Solar, Electric & Roofing in Tucson, for example) were less exposed on active Solar Roof jobs.

## Warranty talk is the long game

Tesla has told multiple contractors it will honor warranties and keep parts available for installed systems. That is the right message on paper. Homeowners bought a roof meant to last decades, not a phone.

Confidence varies. Field characterized phase-out communication as thin and asked how easy storm-damaged or replacement tiles will be to get in five or ten years. Aaron Nichols of Exact Solar flagged that Solar Roof is harder to troubleshoot than rack PV because of the number of individual electrical connections — “a much higher labor cost for anyone who needs help.”

If you still have these systems on your books, treat service capacity like a real P&L line: parts lead times, labor hours, and what you will charge when Tesla’s labor reimbursement rules stop being generous.

## What this means for the next proprietary system

Nobody interviewed by Roofing Contractor declared building-integrated PV dead. They said execution lagged the pitch. Todd Miller of Isaiah Industries / Classic Metal put it bluntly: Tesla spent years treating Solar Roof as a solar product before accepting it was also in the roofing business.

Westfall’s takeaway for shops eyeing the next integrated shingle or tile: look at manufacturer stability, parts availability over a 25-year roof life, and support — before you sink another certification trip and crew rebuild into a closed ecosystem.

Rooftop solar demand did not vanish with this exit. The lesson is sharper: proprietary glass roofs can orphan your training budget overnight. Price that risk into every “exclusive” program pitch you take.
