CertainTeed Bets on Direct-to-Deck Solar: Landmark PWR’s 85-Watt Shingle Ships Nov. 1
CertainTeed launched Landmark PWR on Sept. 24 — an 85-watt, individually removable solar shingle that installs in the roof plane with Landmark asphalt. Debuted at Western Roofing Expo; ships Nov. 1 with HVHZ, CEC and UL 3741 listings pending.
CertainTeed is putting its biggest shingle brand behind integrated solar. On Sept. 24, 2026, the company announced Landmark PWR, a solar roofing system built on its Landmark asphalt line, with an official industry debut at the Western Roofing Expo in Las Vegas (Sept. 28–29, booth #333). The system becomes available Nov. 1, 2026.
The pitch to contractors is simple: a low-profile, direct-to-deck solar shingle that sits in the roof plane instead of on racks, can be pulled one piece at a time for service, and is installed alongside regular shingles. CertainTeed also claims that, for the first time, building-integrated solar is price-competitive with a re-roof plus traditional solar panels — a company claim worth testing against your own numbers.
The spec sheet, in plain terms
CertainTeed’s Landmark PWR product page and pv magazine’s Sept. 29 technical rundown lay out the key numbers:
- Output: 85 W per shingle from 24 half-cut monocrystalline cells at 21.1% cell efficiency. Solar Power World notes CertainTeed’s existing Solstice shingle tops out around 70 W with full-size cells.
- Size and weight: Roughly 4 ft long (121.1 cm x 45.0 cm), 24 lb each, about 0.50 m² of active area.
- Slope: 4:12 minimum.
- Fire: Class A when paired with CertainTeed’s Protect FR underlayment, a self-adhered, fiberglass-reinforced sheet that meets ASTM D1970 and acts as the fire barrier on combustible decks.
- Hail and wind: FM 4473 Class 3 impact; ASTM D3161 Class F wind, up to 110 mph; tested to +2,400/−1,600 Pa design loads.
- Electrical: 600 V max system voltage, two bypass diodes per shingle, MC4 connectors; works with third-party module-level power electronics such as optimizers and microinverters.
- Surround: Works with a variety of adjacent roofing materials up to 1 inch thick.
- Warranty: 25-year limited power warranty (98% output in year one, no more than 0.55% annual degradation), 25-year limited workmanship and 10-year limited wind coverage up to 110 mph.
Pending: Florida Building Code High Velocity Hurricane Zone approval (for peak wind speeds up to 194 mph), California Energy Commission listing and UL 3741 PV hazard control certification, per pv magazine.
Why roofers should care
“As homeowner demand for energy-focused solutions continues to grow, contractors and builders need products that help them differentiate their offerings while simplifying the path to solar adoption,” said Andrew Wickham, CertainTeed’s director of product management, in the launch release.
The serviceability piece is the one to watch. pv magazine reports individual shingles can be removed and replaced without disturbing adjacent roofing or affecting warranties on the surrounding roof. That goes straight at the pain point we flagged when Tesla walked away from its solar roof installers — who services the roof after the manufacturer moves on. A roofing manufacturer backing the system with a 25-year limited workmanship warranty is a different setup — though any warranty is only as good as the maker’s long-term commitment to the line.
There’s still a trade gap to close. Running a 600 V DC system with power electronics is electrical work, so shops without solar experience will need a licensed partner or in-house credentials before they sell it. And until the HVHZ, CEC and UL 3741 listings clear, South Florida and California crews should keep it out of permit sets.
Bottom line
Landmark PWR puts a mainstream asphalt brand behind direct-to-deck solar at a moment when homeowners keep asking about energy. If you already install Landmark, it’s worth seeing at the counter before Nov. 1 — but price it against your own racked-solar and reroof numbers before you lead with CertainTeed’s cost claim.
