Why Metal Is Eating Share on Steep Slope (and Where It Still Loses)

Metal keeps taking steep-slope jobs from asphalt in some segments. Here is where it wins, where it stalls, and what shops should do.

Metal roofing and steep-slope materials

Metal roofing is no longer a niche upsell whispered at the end of an asphalt pitch. In parts of the country, standing seam and stone-coated panels are taking meaningful steep-slope share—especially on retail and remodeled homes where energy, longevity, and curb appeal dominate the conversation. Asphalt is not disappearing. The mix is shifting, and shops that ignore metal leave margin on the table.

Why metal is gaining

  • Longer expected service life versus standard asphalt in customer perception.
  • Energy and cool-roof narratives that resonate in hot markets.
  • Insurance and hail conversations where impact resistance becomes a selling point.
  • Design trends—clean lines, darker colors, modern and farmhouse aesthetics.
  • Homeowner desire to "do it once" after living through multiple asphalt cycles.

Where metal still loses

Price is the obvious wall. Many insurance-driven replacements still default to asphalt because ACV/RCV math and matching norms favor like kind and quality within asphalt systems. Complex cut-up roofs can erase metal's labor efficiency. Noisy rain complaints, coastal fastener and finish concerns, and inexperienced installers creating oil-canning or leak callbacks also limit share. If your market is heavy storm-insurance volume, asphalt remains the volume engine.

Metal share grows where retail education is strong and install quality is proven—not where a crew tries its first seam on a showpiece home.

What shops should build

If you sell metal, certify or deeply train a dedicated crew. Dual-stock common profiles and flashings with a distributor who actually understands metal detailing. Create a clean comparison sheet: asphalt versus metal on price bands, maintenance, noise, and warranty—without trash-talking either system. Qualify jobs early so you do not waste design time on roofs that will never pencil.

Competitive watch

Asphalt manufacturers are not standing still—thicker laminates, impact ratings, and accessory systems still win plenty of jobs. Metal's share gains are real but uneven by region. Track your own close-rate by system. For 2026, the smart steep-slope shop is bilingual: excellent at asphalt insurance work and credible at metal retail. That combination hedges material trends and keeps you in the conversation when the customer says they never want another shingle tear-off.

When to walk away from a metal job

Walk if the structure cannot support the system, if the customer expects asphalt-claim pricing for a metal retail roof, or if your crew lacks a trained lead for that profile. Walk if the distributor cannot commit to flashings and coatings in time. A bad metal install becomes a very public failure on a street where everyone sees the roof.

For hybrid markets, keep asphalt excellence as your volume core while growing metal deliberately. Measure close rates, margins, and callbacks by system quarterly. Metal is eating share in places—but only shops that install it correctly get to keep that share.
